“I’ve Been Out There: On The Road With Legends of Rock ‘n Roll”

Houston’s Grady Gaines was the sax player and leader of the “Destroyers,” the band the backed rock ‘n roll legend Little Richard for the first two years of his earth shaking, butt quaking hall of fame career. After Richard suddenly “retired” from the music business in 1957, Gaines and the band became an in-demand backing touring band for countless stars, including Sam Cooke, Little Willie John, Jackie Wilson, James Brown and Smokey Robinson. Published in 2015 by Texas A&M University Press, the book shines a light on a by gone era when musicians had to bring it every night and recounts Gaines’ remarkable seven-decade career as a brilliant musician and charismatic performer.
